Dieses Gehäuse mit teildurchlässigem Spiegel (SLT = single lens translucent) wurde am 2010-08-24 offiziell vorgestellt. Es handelt sich um die größere Schwester der SLT-A33. Das Gehäuse gehört zur ersten Generation von Sony Alpha VDSLRs mit AVCHD-Videofunktion, zu der auch die DSLR-A560 und DSLR-A580 gehören. Als Nachfolger gilt die SLT-A57V.

Genauso wie bei der Sony Alpha NEX-5 gibt es auch von den Sony VDSLRs SLT-A33, SLT-A55, SLT-A55V, DSLR-A560 und DSLR-A580 je nach Zielland eine von jeweils zwei technischen Ausführungsvarianten, eine mit AVCHD 1080i 50Hz- und die andere AVCHD 1080i 60Hz-Unterstützung. Diese lassen sich anhand der Kennung "50i" oder "60i" auf der Kameraunterseite unterscheiden. Hierzulande wird die 50i-Variante (PAL) ausgeliefert - achtet also beim Kauf darauf, daß ihr ein Exemplar mit deutschen Meldungstexten und 50i-Unterstützung bekommt.
